What is Motivational Interviewing? The simplest definition of Motivational Interviewing (MI) is that it is a particular way of having a conversation about change.
Rooted in the client-centered tradition of Carl Rogers, Motivational Interviewing was developed in the 1980s by William Miller and Stephen Rollnick as a therapeutic style that would more genuinely and respectfully engage clients who are considering a change in their lives. Over the last three decades, MI has been proven to be an efficient and highly effective tool in diverse settings: from a counselor's session to a doctor's consultation or a teacher's lesson, MI helps professionals strengthen their clients' motivation for change. |
Why Learn Motivational Interviewing? Many helping professionals struggle with the reality that the people whom they are trying to serve often choose to act in ways that seem to be clearly destructive. It is painful to have expertise and a desire to share it with others, only to have them ignore, resist, or give superficial agreement that experience tells you will not result in real change. This pattern can lead to feelings of frustration, anger, sadness, and ultimately cynicism and burnout.
Not only is MI a more effective way to reach many ambivalent clients, it is also a style of communication that most professional helpers find more sustainable. |
